Requirements
- A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later).
- macOS 14 or later.
- Reading a USB drive’s health, and Disk Scan, need macOS 27.
Free for 14 days
Every feature works for 14 days, with no account and no card. Then a one-time $9.99 licence keeps SSDHero for good. No subscription. Without buying, SSDHero keeps showing each drive’s status in the menu bar, tells you if a drive gets worse, and still makes a drive’s Health report. See pricing.
Installing
- Open the SSDHero disk image, in your Downloads folder.
- Drag SSDHero to the Applications folder.
- Open SSDHero from Applications.
You can then eject the SSDHero disk image and delete the file you downloaded.
Notarized by Apple
Apple notarizes every version of SSDHero: it checks the app for malicious software before macOS lets it open. The app is signed by its developer, runs in Apple’s sandbox, never writes to the drives it checks, and sends nothing about them anywhere.
To check the file you downloaded, compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page. In Terminal: shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/SSDHero-*.dmg
Updates
Updates arrive inside the app. Once a day, SSDHero checks this site for a new version. You can turn the check off in SSDHero’s Settings and check by hand instead; the privacy notice says what the check sends. Updates to SSDHero 1.x are free, and this page always has the latest version.
What’s new in 1.3.3
SSDHero’s update notes link here. This page keeps only the latest version’s.
- Your order number in Settings. Settings → License shows the same order number as your licence email, starting with sh-, so it’s the one to give support.
- Blocked licence keys. A licence key that was shared publicly or resold can be blocked, as the terms say. SSDHero then says the key was blocked, not that it was refunded, and how to reach support if that’s a mistake.
- Disk Scan reads through more enclosures. It reads each drive the way macOS itself does. If an enclosure doesn’t answer, or takes no way of reading at all, the scan says so on its card instead of just stopping, and neither is counted against the drive.
- A failed read is checked before it counts. Disk Scan reads it again in small pieces, and lists a block as unreadable only if it fails again while the drive still reads elsewhere. If the enclosure stops answering partway, those reads aren’t counted against the drive.
- Writes by app. Which apps write to your Mac’s SSD today, drawn as a river of streams from midnight to now, each app with its share of the day in percent. Pick one to see its busiest ten minutes, what it’s writing now, and how much longer the SSD would last without it. A small helper inside SSDHero reads each app’s write count, the one Activity Monitor shows; nothing leaves your Mac.
- Data written per day moves beside it, on its own Per day tab.
- The self-test on the globe. A drive’s own self-test now uses Disk Scan’s globe: a fog round it thickens tenth by tenth as the drive reports, with a light shining out through it. If the test fails on a read, the first bad block the drive logged glows red in orbit, at its place on the drive.
- History in tabs. Trends and Readings, so the page is shorter.
- The download carries its version in its name, like SSDHero-1.3.3.dmg.
